Mark Millar’s Jupiter’s Legacy is coming to Netflix
Jupiter Legacy is all the buzz this month. The upcoming series is currently in development at Netflix and is based on comic legend, Mark Millar’s comic book of the same name. Could the Millarworld Universe get as big as the MCU?
Jupiter Legacy follows the story of the children of 1930s superheroes as they try to live up to their parents’ heroic legacy.
The comic book was first published in 2013 then in 2017 Netflix bought the rights to the comic book, together with Miller’s other intellectual property, with the intent of producing a number of series and movies based on his creations.
Production on Jupiter’s Legacy began a year later. Since then, despite a slight hiccup in production in 2019, production on the series has been going steady with the show set to release in May, 2021.
So far fans of Millarworld and intrigued viewers have had the privilege of seeing a teaser trailer that shows artistic drawings as they morph into photographic images, hinting at the comic book to screen journey.
Netflix have also recently released images showing off the classic superhero garb that will be donned on by the series heroes Utopian (Josh Duhamel), Grace (Leslie Bibb) and Walter (Ben Daniels). But other than that not much has been revealed about the upcoming series.
But it’s certain that fans and perhaps even just intrigued movie watchers have some high expectations for Jupiter Legacy and future Millarworld productions, especially after Netflix chief content officer, Ted Sarandos dubbed Mark Millar as the “modern day Stan Lee”.
Could the Millarworld Universe get as big as the MCU?
Interestingly enough, Millar’s work has actually heavily influenced the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). His comic books and story arcs were what inspired the Marvel’s Captain America: Civil War, Hugh Jackman’s Logan film as well as the first Avengers film.
His own creations have also gone on to become highly successful films. (Kick-Ass, Kingsman). But the burgeoning Millarworld Universe may quite a long way to go before it can claim the same cinematic popularity as Marvel. However, it does have quite a few things going for it.
For starters, Millar’s work appears to tackle issues that audiences around the world can easily relate to.
A good example is Jupiter Legacy, whose story arc of trying to live up to expectations is easily modern day kids could easily relate to. Then there’s his comic book, Empress, a family drama which follows the story of a mother who must flee to her homeland with her three children to escape her intergalactic-dictator husband.
Millar’s unique approach to superheroes, the supernatural and intergalactic could just be what gets people interested in Millar’s future work once it hits the screens, especially in a world where such films and series are becoming increasingly popular.
However, will it be enough for him to gain as big a following as the MCU? Maybe…maybe not. We can only tell once the rest of his work finally starts hitting the screens.
