NEWS OUT OF AFRICA – Tech/Entertainment

The French Institute and The Art Of Comics

In 2019 the French Institute of South Africa initiated a comic exhibition titled The Art of Comics. The event set out to highlight that French and African comics may have more in common when it comes to heroic fantasy, science fiction and history, than one would think. Comic authors from South Africa, Zimbabwe, Nigeria, Cameroon, Senegal, Côte d’Ivoire and Algeria were grouped together and their amazing work was showcased.

The exhibition was a huge success, so much so that the French Institute of South Africa has come up with a new event for this year.

Introducing Afropolitan Comics

This 2020, the French Institute of South Africa has partnered with Angoulême’s International centre for comics and images to create – Afropoliton. This online exhibition, which is free to access, will be available to view until July 2021. It will showcase and further explore the work of gifted comic authors of African comics and aims to continue building bridges between Anglophone and Francophone comic creators in Africa.
