Comic Republic Signs a Production Deal

In the words of Jide Martin, CEO of publishing and multimedia company, Comic Republic, “It’s a great time to be alive”.

Once more, African audiences can look forward to seeing more African heroes and characters on their screens as publishing company, Comic Republic, have signed a production deal to adapt their stories for film and television.

The deal will see the company partnering with Emagine Content and JackieBoy Entertainment to bring their stories to life.

And the first project in the works is Comic Republic’s Ireti.

Comic Republic’s Ireti Is Going on the Silver Screen!

Billed as the first African female superhero, Ireti follows the story of a university student in Ibadan, Nigeria who is blessed with superpowers.

Under the partnership, Ireti will be adapted into a feature film that will lead the way in bringing more authentic, unique and African stories to the television and film industry.

African Animations Selected for the Annecy International Animated Film Festival

This 2021, two African animations were selected for the Annecy International Animation Film Festival, showcasing the first class creativity of African creators whilst proving that African stories have potential in the world and .

The first is a 15- episode animated series titled Kenda, co- produced by Trace network and Ivorian company, iMotion. The animated series follows the life of a little girl named Kenda and her friends.

The second is Nigeria’s first animated feature film, Lady Buckit and the Motley Monsters. Created by Blessing Amidu and directed by Adebisi Adetayo, the film follows the story of young girl whose life is transformed when she accidently travels through time and meets a group of strange creatures.

An Update on Disney and Kugali Media’s Iwájú

The upcoming African animated Disney series, Iwájú,  has been in production since its announcement in December, 2020, with the promise that it will be premiering in 2022.

However, recently, co-founder of Kugali Media, Toni Olowofoyeku, sat down in an interview with News Central and revealed that the premiere date has actually been pushed back to 2023.

In the interview, Olowofoyeku, also gave insight into the origins of Kugali Media, the challenges the company has faced in creating their own content and even shared some details about Iwájú‘s  production team.

Black Manta is Getting His Own Spin-off

Aquaman’s half-brother and nemesis, Black Manta is getting his own comic!

Titled, Black Manta, the new issue will  follow after Manta’s appearance in the Aquaman 80th Anniversary 100-Page Super Spectacular  and will see Black Manta going against friends and foe to get his hands on a rare metal with incredible powers.

Written by Chuck Brown (Bitter Root) with art by Valentine De Landro , Black Manta #1 will be available in stores and online on September 7, 2021.
