What is Africa Comics?

Africa Comics is an online database of more than 2500 drawings created by artists in almost all of Sub-Saharan Africa. This database is one the richest collection of original African comics in the world. And the journey to create it all began in 1999.

Where It All Began

In 1999, a team of experts of African cultural heritage and contemporary creativity were in search of a way to present African in a modern and diverse way. They wanted to depart from the stereotypical views of the continent.

Two organisations, Africa e Mediterraneo and Lai-momo, decided to focus on the medium of comics as a way to do achieve this. They partnered up with African cartoonists in various projects that culminated in a Pan-African competition that spread African comics across the globe with exhibitions in Bologna, Dakar, New York and many other places.

The work from all their initiatives is featured on the Africa Comics online database. So, if you’re eager to see the creative images, thoughts and stories of these African artists check out the website below.
