NEWS OUT OF AFRICA – Movies/Animation
Netflix and Lockdown
Netflix has millions of subscribers in over 190 countries and with the current COVID pandemic that number has increased. With countries across the globe on lockdown people have been forced to stay home and for some, that means more streaming time. This has resulted in a rise in the number of people signing in to Netflix.
But, even though Netflix has seen an increase in new subscribers there has been no new content, as production has been halted by the pandemic. Luckily most of its 2020 lineups have been shot and are in post production and what’s more, the blow to the entertainment industry has opened Netflix’s eyes to the wealth of stories available in Africa. Stories they want the world to see.
Netflix Looking to Africa
In the hopes of producing more African content, Netflix made Kenyan film producer, Dorothy Ghettuba, their Head of African Original Programming in December 2019. After the launch of their “Made in Africa” series last year in May, a collection of 100 titles based throughout the African continent that ran throughout the month, Netflix are hoping to showcase more African content to the world in the near future and Ghettuba is going to help them do it.
